President Joe Biden announced a variety of new steps to battle a rise of Covid-19 cases in the United States, with the goal of reassuring vaccinated Americans that they may still go about their Christmas activities without danger of becoming gravely ill.
"I know some Americans are wondering if you can safely celebrate the holidays with your family and friends. The answer is, yes you can if you and those you celebrate with are vaccinated, particularly if you've gotten your booster shot," Biden said.
The address, was delivered only days before Christmas, illustrates Biden's heightened attention on the coronavirus epidemic, as worry grows across the country about the sharp increase in cases and if further restrictive measures would be required to curb the spread.
Throughout his remarks, Biden underlined that the present situation is not the same as it was in March 2020, when the coronavirus tightened its grip on the United States.
"The other question folks are asking is, 'Are we going back to March 2020?' ... The answer is absolutely no. No," Biden said.
The President reassured vaccinated Americans that if they take the necessary measures, they should be able to enjoy the holidays as planned, but he also warned the tens of millions of Americans who have so far refused to receive vaccines that they face a significant chance of being ill or being hospitalized. He also used his predecessor's name to push Americans to get their booster injection.
