World health chief predicted Thursday that once Omicron subsides, the Covid epidemic may reach its "endgame."
Hans Kluge believes that worldwide immunity will be achieved shortly as a result of vaccinations and spontaneous infection.
This came after England announced that it will remove all Covid restrictions as the first big government to do so. "It's likely that (Europe) is headed towards a type of pandemic finale," said Dr. Kluge, the World Health Organization's European director.
“There will be, for quite some weeks and months, a global immunity, either thanks to the vaccine or because people have immunity due to the infection. So we anticipate there will be a period of quiet before Covid-19 may come back towards the end of the year, but not necessarily the pandemic coming back.” Kluge said
According to him, Omicron might infect 60% of Europeans by March, resulting in widespread immunity. The variety is more infectious than previous strains, although it produces less severe symptoms.
On March 24, all Covid laws in England will be repealed as the public learns to live with Covid in the same way it learns to live with flu.
"There is a lot of discussion about (it becoming) endemic," Dr. Kluge cautioned, "but endemic means that it is feasible to forecast what will happen."
“The virus has surprised us more than once so we have to be very careful.” he added.
