Russia said that it launched hypersonic missiles from its "Kinzhal" system for the first time in the country's more than three-week invasion to target an underground weapons storage location in the west.
According to an emailed statement from the Ministry of Defense, the military utilized Kinzhal (Dagger) missiles on Friday to strike a location housing missiles and aircraft ammunition in the hamlet of Delyatyn, outside the city of Ivano-Frankivsk.
According to the Russian news outlet RIA Novosti, the reported hit was the first use of the nuclear-capable sophisticated weapons system in the Ukraine war.
Ukraine did not immediately notify any Russian strike on the military site and did not respond to Russia's assertions. There is also no mention of explosions on social media, despite the fact that striking a "large subterranean" ammo stockpile would be audible.
The Kinzhal, which can contain conventional or nuclear warheads, can travel at speeds of up to 10 times the speed of sound, or more than 2 miles per second, according to President Vladimir Putin, who introduced the system in his annual state-of-the-nation address in 2018.
The Kinzhal was one of many next-generation strategic weapons that Putin claimed could defeat any US missile defenses at the time.
