Former Sen. Johnny Isakson died aged 76

Former Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, a Republican with a long political career, died at the age of 76.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement Sunday that the state had "lost a giant" and recalled Isakson as "one of its greatest statesmen, and a servant leader devoted to leaving his state and country better than he found it."

"Johnny Isakson embodied all that it meant to be a Georgian. Johnny was a close friend to Marty, the daughters, and me, as he was to so many others "Kemp made the announcement in a statement.

According to the official Biographical Directory of the United States Congress, Isakson died just days before his 77th birthday.

He was a senator for over 15 years before resigning in 2019 due to health issues. At the time of his announcement, he was recovering from a fall that cracked four ribs and underwent surgery to remove a tumor on his kidney, all as his Parkinson's illness progressed.
