Robert Durst, HBO's 'The Jinx' subject has died, aged 78

According to his longtime attorney, Dick DeGuerin, Robert Durst, the eccentric millionaire who captivated audiences as the subject of HBO's documentary series "The Jinx" before being convicted of murder last year, has died in a California prison hospital. He was 78 years old.

Durst died of natural causes at 6:44 a.m. on Monday at the California Health Care Facility in Stockton, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

The cause of death will be determined by the coroner in San Joaquin County.

Durst, who is serving a life sentence without the possibility of release, has been receiving treatment since October, when he was diagnosed with Covid-19. The real estate heir also had a slew of other diseases, including bladder cancer.

Durst's crazy life of riches and notoriety was played out in front of tens of millions of HBO viewers in 2015.

Durst inherited his riches after being born into a New York City building empire founded by family, including his father. The deaths of three individuals close to him earned him notoriety, beginning with his first wife, Kathie McCormack Durst.
